January 24: Choice Pass Kiddos

Choice Pass Kiddos: January 24

By Matt Estrada and John Hausdoerffer
We were blessed with the opportunity to lead a group of Gunnison Middle School Choice Pass Holders, all over Headwall and North Face. Hayden, Atalaya, Jacey, and Luke named themselves the Gnarly Shredders. With Imagine Dragons blasting from a speaker, they ripped through Ear Canal, down Rabbit Ears Chute, and over Waterfall. At the end of the day, as we rode the Queen to Peel, a group of adult skiers ahead of us were smoking pot. It reeked!  We let the kids react on their own, after asking the smokers to apologize to the kids. We are so proud of these kids! Sitting above Peel, one kid pointed out that pot slows brain development, one kid said “they can make whatever choice they want, but I wish they would not force the choice on us to have to breathe that.” Indeed, this is all about choices and in the spirit of Choice Pass we were proud of these kids for thinking so critically about the poor choice made in public by these adults and the alternative choices available on a bluebird day with soft snow. As one of the kids said, “why isn’t the great skiing enough of a high?”
