January 19: Palisades

January 19: Palisades

By Matt Estrada and John Hausdoerffer

Tonight we skied up the frozen river banks of the Gunnison, under starlight across from the Palisades. Life is not always easy, and we recently had to cancel some training sessions we had planned. So tonight was about recommitting to training, together, toward a common goal. We did not climb any peaks, we only skied for an hour-and-a-half, but it was a reminder of how important it is to sometimes just keep moving. Without training for Grand Traverse, and without training together, we would not have experienced the way in which moving the body, recirculating endorphins and reconnecting with friends, can help us escape the inertia that can come from breaking out of habits when life gets hard. We were able to share our recent challenges, as the cold air and physical exercise woke up our bodies and spirits. How liberating to have skiing, running rivers, tall cliffs framing a caring community, and the trust of friendship to talk through challenges and reignite our best selves. No drug can ever match that combination!
