March 1: Continental Divide

March 1: Continental Divide

If you view each day as an empty canvas and each choice as a brushstroke then your life becomes a fun art project. Matt and I ended the first day of March with just such a painting. We each spent the day connecting with our kids and loved ones in the mountains, and met up on Monarch Pass in a light snow storm as the day slowly transitioned to evening. John had to take a week off of skiing for a work trip back East and was hurting on the skin up Mirkwood, but by the time we reached 12,000 feet and Matt dove into the Mirkwood trees this partnership for Choice Youth was back in action. By the time we re-skinned for the second uphill-downhill run from the bottom of Garfield Lift to the Continental Divide atop Old Monarch Pass, the gloaming (that time between sunset and full darkness) settled in. From the pass, we looked out at the dying gold beyond the distant San Juans. The storm began to clear. We skied up to the top of Gun-barrel, looked out at stars and sparkling fresh snow, and glided down to the car. Three hours of heaven. We can look back on the choice, the brushstroke, to end the day connected to friends and nature in this way and feel the joy an artist feels after a new painting.
